Also weiter auf Englisch: I really feel that Britons in general still know almost nothing, good or bad, about the EU. This is not because people are ignorant, but because they’ve deliberately been kept in the dark. “Leavers” (those who voted to leave the EU) seem to have been misled by the UK media and by various disinformation campaigns into thinking that leaving the EU will somehow give them more control over their own affairs. I think that the opposite is more likely to be the case. The British often see the EU as the devil, but, as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote, when Faust asks: Nun gut, wer bist du denn? Mephistopheles answers: Ein Teil von jener Kraft, Die stets das Böse will und stets das Gute schafft. That’s more or less how I see the EU. Whatever the real reason for founding the common market back in the 1950s, I think the EU has brought Europeans much that is good: above all friendship between nations. Now, with Brexit, again we have suspicion of other nations, and in the UK we have something verging on civil war. Geht das Gute, das von Mephistopheles ungewollt geschaffen wurde, jetzt wieder verloren? Das bleibt wohl abzuwarten… Tschüss!"
